Joe Mairs died in Oakalla Prison in 1914 and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. Mairs was the recipient of several awards related to bicycle racing. Mairs was on strike when he was arrested for throwing rocks at the homes of strike breakers in Ladysmith, British Columbia. Mairs died after serving five months of his sentence. Mairs is buried in the Ladysmith Cemetery and his memorial includes an inscription from his brothers of District 28, United Mine Workers of America.
