Letter
Gull ink on paper; now in four pieces, tears along the fold lines; letter is dated; letter addressed to A. Urqhart from J. Anderson reads as follows: Revelstoke, March 14, 1910, A. Urqhart, Esq. Dear Sir: I just took a notion to drop you a few lines this evening. No doubt you have read in the newspapers ? about the terrible accident we had at Rogers Pass. I lost my brother Charlie, he was buried here in Revelstoke yesterday. I have resigned my position and have not worked since the accident happened as I certainly don't want another experience like it. It has completely unnerved me as far as Bucking snow is concerned. We had a storm that lasted for 10 days and during that time we had over 8' of a snow fall besides slides. I was clearing a slide at on (?) the New Division opposite 17 Shed. I left for about one half hour to go down to the Watchshack at 18 Shed and send a message to Revelstoke. When I returned I found everything buried, a slide about half a mile long had come down from the south side of the track. I found the Rotary pitched right on top of the Shed. Everything was in darkness and the wind blowing hard and 58 men buried in the slide. I have been to one and two funerals every day this week and there is still a large number of Bodies left at the undertaking Parlour. My relief has not come yet but I heard today that they sent for J. (T.)? Nichols to come up and relieve me. Poor J.J. Fraser was with me and was caught he came up from Field for a few days to help me out. There was also 3 Extra Gang Foremen one Mason Foreman one Section Foreman killed. Well Allan you can imagine how bad I feel about loosing (sic) all those men. I have not decided yet what move to make. If the new man does not come soon I may have to be around for a while to give them a little assistance til it is turned over although I am not taking any active part. Forde is appointed Acting Roadmaster for the time being.
