Description
8mm Film
5" reel holds a 12 minute silent film made with an 8 mm Kodak which documents a year at the orchards and packinghouse of R.H. [RobertHenry] Macdonald Packing House, where Buffalo Brand Apples were grown and packed. William wanted to be a film maker and set out to document his family's business. His Uncle Ian appears making boxes in part of the film. None of the other individuals seen are thought to be family members. The film goes from spring pruning, through blossoms, spraying and harvesting to packing the finished product. Machinery includes horses and ladders, a tracked cat, and vehicles. The scene of a woman packing an apple is remarkable. R.H. Macdonald appears listed simply as "farmer" in the 1837-38 directories for Vernon. The site of the orchard and packinghouse is now a subdivision. Digitized to VHS in 2004 and to DVD in 2006. VHS returned to donor, DVD in document file. LH Metal reel, no box, film name inscribed in pencil on reel.
