Shelf Clock
French. Very ornate, gold-washed with porcelain face plate and three porcelain decorative panels and large final on top. Background colour of porcelain is turquoise, face plate has Roman numerals and two children with Billy goat. Front decorative panel shows man in purple dress, stockings and cape walking with woman in long pink and white dress. Side panels and band around final is in multi-coloured floral motif. Workings are French manufacture, and the marks indicate it is after 1855, most probably after 1865.
Provenance
The Gates family lived in Fernie from 1902, in 1908 they acquired the King Edward Hotel in Fernie. In 1929 they moved to Vancouver. In 1935 they moved to Victoria and operated the Metropole Hotel on Yates Street. The clock and candlesticks were acquired by Captain J.L. Gates in Victoria and given to his mother before he went to war. John Lothian Gates, of the South Saskatchewan Regiment, was killed in France July 20, 1944.
