Candlestick
One of a pair of Dresden porcelain candlesticks. White background with gold outlining and applied and painted-on flowers. 2b has slightly paler pink crocusses on the front, and although they are a pair, there are slight differences in the flower painting. Three curved legs, leaf-like collar around top portion. Marked on bottom "SP" with Dresden underneath which was registered officially in 1902 and used mainly in the last half of the 20C (stands for Saxon Porcelain).
Provenance
The Gates family lived in Fernie from 1902, in 1908 they acquired the King Edward Hotel in Fernie. IN 1929 they moved to Vancouver, in 1935 they moved to Victoria and operated the Metropole Hotel on Yates Street. The clock and candlesticks were acquired in Victoria by Captain J.L. Gates as a gift for his mother before he went to war. John Lothian Gates, of the South Saskatchewan Regiment, was killed in France July 20, 1944.
