Description
Mitre Box
Information on this mitre box itself indicates that it received patents from between 1874-1893. A 'history of the Miller Falls Company' (see document file) which took control of the Langdon Mitre Box company in 1906, indicates that this brand of mitre box was first patented in 1864 by L.W. Langdon, that the "cast iron mitre box with its locable adjustments was the first tool of its kind to enjoy widespread acceptance", and that 'Millers Falls Tools' was still using this familiar name up into 1971 (production of this mitre box moved to Millers Falls in about 1876). Though the label on the mitre box is in poor condition, it notes that this is a size 1 with back saw 24 X 4 - $10.56 (product comes in size 1, 2, and 2 1/2), and that it is 'Improved'. Phrase 'put up with saws' is also on it. Info. in the Hammacher, Schlemmer & Co. catalogue (see document file for photocopy) notes that a size 1 mitre box gives 6 inches width at right angles, 4 inches at mitre.
