Used as part of make up for formal occasion, parties, evening wear. When put on the face, it was to draw attention to a particularly attractive facial feature. If your eyes were your best feature, the spot would be put nearby. Beauty Spots.
Provenance
These are from Empire Revival period ca. (1910) when the styles of ca.1810 were imitated. In 1810 the spots were used to cover smallpox scars (there are stories of women wearing up to 40 spots!), in 1910 it was fashion. These spots are made of woven black cloth with a type of animal base glue(?) on one side. They are shaped in crescent moons, circles, clover leaves, stars, squares, triangles.
