Provenance
Josephine was born in Olympia Washington in 1870 and entered in as a student in Victoria at St. Anne's in 1876 age "unknown" but approximately six. She became the nursemaid to the family of James Dunsmuir who lived in a house at Departure Day. She married John Harper, son of the owner of the Bay Hotel in 1888. Document file contains an 1890 picture showing her wearing the earrings. The family remained friends with Bessie Hope, daughter of James. The family recalls seeing two small photographs in the family bible which may have been in the locket. The locket is in an Egyptian motif, similar to the 1850s revival. Her parents may have moved to Nanaimo and the family remembers them as having a fish store which burned down. Material in document file supplied by family during 2004 visit.
