Description
Syrup Dispenser
Ceramic globe shaped like an orange with grass and flowers around the base. "Ward's Orange Crush" in black print on front and back. Pump missing.
Provenance
The donor first saw this particular globe as a child in the mid 1930s: "It was located at Doc's Drug Store in Kirkland Lake, northern Ontario. At that time it was used to hold small packets of a powder to make a sweet drink at a person's home, (similar to Koolaid). It is a distinct memory because my grandmother frequently bought me a packet from it when I accompanied her during her morning shopping. A dozen or so years later the globe was long gone but the store was still in business. I mentioned it to the owner, "Doc" Ames, and he told me he still had the dispenser in storage. He had purchased it new in 192? when he opened the store but stopped using it for its original purpose when he shut down his soda fountain during the depression and moved to smaller premises. While visiting my parents in 1968, they told me that Mr. Ames had died and some of his goods were sold at a garage sale. A longtime neighbour of my parents had bought the dispenser. He intended to use the pump to meter insecticide for his garden and he probably did. He started to make a lamp from the globe but when I admired it, he gave it to me. The globe has been on my bookshelves ever since." (May 18, 2003)
