Provenance
Worn by Lieutenant Donal Lewis Darling, a native son of Vancouver, B.C. where he worked as a gas engineer. Donald joined the 6th Filed Company, Canadian Engineers in North Vancouver August 24, 1915. He was awarded the Military Cross when serving with the 7th Canadian Engineers. The citation records "For conspicuous gallantry and determination on the night of 25th October 1918 in reconnoitering the crossing of L'Escaut Canal at the old bridge site near Thiers. The opposite bank was held by the enemy, and a machine-gun continually swept the western band and approaches while trench mortars bombed the road. He climbed over the embankment 15 feet high, and down the demolished abutments of the wrecked bridge, remaining nearly two hours obtaining measurements and particulars of site for a new bridge. The point was about 500 yards in advance of our outpost line.

He later served with Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.
